Carnival and New Years    English 

A city-wide explosion of typically Carioca merry-making, with the greatest street celebration in Brazil. From Friday evening through to the following Tuesday, Carnival revelers dance through the streets. The highlight is undoubtedly the world-famous Samba School Parade in the Sambadrome downtown. This is surely the world's largest and liveliest street festival, involving locals and foreigners alike with its irresistible excitement. Months of intensive preparation include sewing elaborate costumes, rehearsing at the samba schools and try-outs for neighborhood samba groups. Rio gears up for the great day, eager to welcome visitors with typical Carioca warmth. Surrounded by a dazzling array of costumes and floats, quick-footed samba stars dance to the driving beat of deafening drums as the public cheers.This is truly the people's festival, with everyone welcome to join in the fun. Smaller informal groups dance through the streets to the music of neighborhood bands, while there are Carnival Balls organized by clubs and hotels all over town. There is no doubt that Carnival in Rio weaves gaiety and music, lore and light, into a bewitching blend of myth and magic.    

 

 

New Year`s Eve in Rio is the spectacular firework display on the Copacabana Beach. Fireworks are set off both on the beach and from many of the luxury hotels along the beachfront. The sky and sea are painted in exquisite colors, as the fireworks go off. In addition to the traditional Click !display in all shapes and shades, the new designer fireworks they use draw hearts, palms, and other graphic images in the sky. It is thirty minutes of pure delight. It is hard to decide which direction to look at, with fireworks popping all around you. It is much more fun to watch the festival from the great outdoors than from indoors. Seeing 2,000,000 people all dressed in white along the beach, which is filled with candles, is unforgettable. In addition to the feeling of togetherness, you will be able to keep turning around in wonder as much as you want, instead of having to fight for window space. Two million and a half actors on a single stage. On the last day of the year, the beaches of Copacabana hold a universal population formed by cariocas from Rio and so many other people who adopt the city. There are two million and a half persons immersed in an atmosphere of ecstasy, the delicious mixture of peace and euphoria that happens on the beaches. And when everything seems to be complete, the sky is illuminated with fireworks, luminous reams, colors, sounds, applause, devotion. The new year has arrived.
