A
city-wide explosion of typically Carioca merry-making, with the greatest street
celebration in Brazil. Aparty for the entire town, interlinking thrills, creativeness,
colors, music, costumes and
plenty
of dreams. The sheer scope of Carnival
involves art, music, literature, magic and above all, life itself. Carnival
is the high spot of Rio's fun-in-the-sun calendar, and is closely identified
with the nation's roots and traditions. From Friday evening through to the following
Tuesday, Carnival revelers dance through the streets. The highlight is undoubtedly
the world-famous Samba School Parade in the Sambadrome downtown. This is surely
the world's largest and liveliest street festival, involving locals and foreigners
alike with its irresistible excitement. Months of intensive preparation include
sewing elaborate costumes, rehearsing at the samba schools and try-outs for
neighborhood samba groups. Rio gears up for the great day, eager to welcome
visitors with typical Carioca warmth. Surrounded by a dazzling array of costumes
and floats, quick-footed samba stars dance to the driving beat of deafening
drums as the public cheers. This is truly the people's festival, with everyone
welcome to join in the fun. Smaller informal groups dance through the streets
to the music of neighborhood bands, while there are Carnival Balls organized
by clubs and hotels all over town. There is no doubt that Carnival in Rio weaves
gaiety and music, lore and light, into a bewitching blend of myth and magic.

New
Year`s Eve
in Rio is the spectacular firework display on the Copacabana Beach. Fireworks
are set off both on the beach and from many of the luxury hotels along the beachfront.
The sky and sea are painted in exquisite colors, as the fireworks go off. In
addition to the traditional
display
in all shapes and shades, the new designer fireworks they use draw hearts, palms,
and other graphic images in the sky. It is thirty minutes of pure delight. It
is hard to decide which direction to look at, with fireworks popping all around
you. It is much more fun to watch the festival from the great outdoors than
from indoors. Seeing 2,000,000 people all dressed in white along the beach,
which is filled with candles, is unforgettable. In addition to the feeling of
togetherness, you will be able to keep turning around in wonder as much as you
want, instead of having to fight for window space. Two million and a half actors
on a single stage. On the last day of the year, the beaches of Copacabana hold
a universal population formed by cariocas from Rio and so many other people
who adopt the city. There are two million and a half persons immersed in an
atmosphere of ecstasy, the delicious mixture of peace and euphoria that happens
on the beaches. And when everything seems to be complete, the sky is illuminated
with fireworks, luminous reams, colors, sounds, applause, devotion. The new
year has arrived.
